Dog shows have a long history from their humble beginnings to the large globally renowned shows we know today. There are highly professional shows as well as more laid back shows that anyone and any breed of furry friend can enter. If you entered a dog show, which breed would you enter?

The American Kennel Club runs the top show, the Westminster. Did you know that the Empire State Building celebrates the Westminster by projecting yellow and purple lights on the building?
It's called Crufts and it's the biggest dog show in the U.K. The show got its start in the late 1800s and it is still being held annually today.
The "conformation" refers to the dog's physical features, including appearance and body structure. These are the features that the animals are judged on.

Dogs are never judged against each other as no two breeds are the same. Each dog is compared to the ideal dog in its breed, i.e. according to a written standard for that breed.

It has been going since 1877. In 1884, the American Kennel Club took over from the Westminster Kennel Club as the event organizer and it has carried on ever since.

The dogs are first divided into male and female categories, then they're classified according to six classes. Specialty shows are meant to focus on one specific breed.

An all rounder refers to a judge who is qualified to judge any breed of dog. Not all judges carry this qualification.

Dogs from the miscellaneous group are not allowed to compete in the All-Breed show. These dogs aren't recognized as official breeds by the American Kennel Club.
