The Ultimate Donnie Darko Quiz

Jake Gyllenhaal plays the role of Donnie Darko, a teenage boy who has some pretty serious mental issues. Gyllenhaal had previously appeared in other big movies, such as "October Sky" and "City Slickers."

Richard Kelly, at the time a relatively unknown writer, was the visionary director behind "Donnie Darko." He later worked on movies such as "Southland Tales" and "The Box."

Kelly also wrote the eerie script behind this strange movie. He managed to get the screenplay in front of Drew Barrymore, who was excited about the story.

Donnie has schizophrenia … and he recently decided to stop taking his medication. As a result, he starts sleepwalking.

Frank is dressed in a ridiculous bunny costume. But he's not a funny bunny -- he's downright terrifying.

Frank is a freaky guy in a bunny outfit. He tells Donnie that the world is going to end … in exactly 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. If you haven't guessed yet, this movie is not for people who are prone to nightmares.

An unexplained jet engine roars from the sky and obliterates Donnie's bedroom. The odd events set the bizarre tone for the rest of the movie.

Kelly said the inspiration for the rabbit costume came from "Watership Down," the super depressing book about bunnies written by Richard Adams in 1972.

This was Seth Rogen's very first feature film. He later gained fame in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Pineapple Express."

Frank instructs Donnie to commit a major act of destruction. Donnie damages a water pipe, which then floods the building.

Barrymore is Donnie's English teacher. She recognizes Donnie's struggles but also sees that he's an intelligent student.

Donnie is definitely a bit "off." But his weirdness attracts a girl named Gretchen and the two begin dating.

Cunningham is a motivational speaker who gains fame for spewing trite advice. Donnie may be troubled … but he has no difficulty seeing through Cunningham's superficial statements.

Frank begins peppering Donnie with ideas about time travel. Donnie is mystified by the concept and begins asking other people about how time travel might work.

The budget came in at just under $5 million. It made a little over $7 million at the box office and still draws in many fans through DVD rentals and streaming services.

Filming took about 28 days which, appropriately, is about the same amount of time that Frank tells Donnie he has before the world ends.

Frank tells Donnie to burn down the house of motivational speaker Jim Cunningham. Donnie hesitates, but then sets the house ablaze.

Donnie manages to avoid detection. However, firefighters find child pornography in the ruins of Cunningham's house. Cunningham is immediately in handcuffs.

Sparkle Motion is a dance team, and they set off for a dance competition in the hopes of winning prize money that they can use to defend Jim Cunningham against his child porn charges.

This movie was way too weird for Hollywood. It didn't receive any Oscar nominations … but it did become an underground sensation and made stars of several actors.

Critics raved about the movie's amazing story and excellent construction. The eventual director's cut got even better reviews.

Andrews created the film's creepy musical score. He played all of the instruments himself because the small budget didn't allow him to hire other musicians.

There aren't any Nine Inch Nails songs on the soundtrack. It features songs from Pantera, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and other big bands, including -- of course -- Echo & The Bunnymen.

Richard Kelly gets credit for creating the film's weird concepts, but Barrymore was the person who made the movie a reality. Her production company, Flower Films, provided financing.

The poster was supposed to feature an Arabic font. But then the 9/11 terror attacks happened and the font was quickly changed.

In 2009, a sequel called "S. Darko" was released. Richard Kelly had no involvement with the movie, which got scathing reviews. Kelly, however, may eventually make an official sequel if he can secure financing.

As Gretchen and Donnie scramble for safety, she's struck by a car. The driver? Frank, the scary man-bunny.

Donnie is devastated by Gretchen's death. He pulls out his father's gun and shoots Frank in his big bunny eye. But a happy ending is definitely not in the works.

The time travel aspects of the plot come full circle. Just as at the beginning of the movie, a jet engine falls into the house -- only this time, Donnie is in his bed. The jet engine crushes him.

The movie is constructed so that audiences can create their own interpretations. That's another way of saying, "No one has any idea."
