About This Quiz

The United States is a unique nation in the world. Most nations are also referred to as states, with their internal regions called some variation on "prefecture" or "county." The U.S., however, is a nation made of states. It is, effectively, a nation of smaller nations, and out of the many, one is produced.

Americans tend to be very proud of the states they call home, or at the very least the states they came from. At various times in our history, states have risen and fallen in importance, either economically or culturally, and their cultures have changed as military bases open, companies relocate, and waves of immigrants move in.

Would the midwest be the same if not for the push to settle it in the 1800s as the nation's breadbasket? Would the steel mills of Pittsburgh have had their glory days without the Irish, German, and Polish immigrants who spent their lives smelting steel for the likes of the New York skyline? Would California's agricultural sector produce some of the finest wines in the world without the workers who come to the state for the picking season? What would New York be without Broadway? Or Louisville without Muhammad Ali and baseball? What would Texas be without its cowboys or its Dallas Cowboys?

These questions are existential, and as surely personal as the questions we will ask you in our quest to determine which American state matches your soul.
