The book of Judges in the Old Testament tells the story of Samson. Known for his amazing strength, Samson not only killed a lion with his bare hands, he also killed many Philistines, Israel's enemies at the time, using just a donkey jawbone. His strength came from his long hair and when Deliah sold him out the Philistines after cutting his hair, Samson was captured. God gave him one last display of strength, however, and he destroyed a Philistine temple by pushing over its support pillars, killing himself and all inside.

A book of the Bible that doesn't mention the word, God? Yes, in fact, there are two! The first is the book of Esther and the second is Song of Songs.

When portrayed in paintings, Matthew is often seen carrying a purse. Why is this? Well, before he was called to serve God as a disciple of Jesus, Matthew was a tax collector.

While bringing the Gospel to the world, the disciples endured horrible deaths. For example, Paul was beheaded in Rome and Peter was crucified upside down. The third son of Adam and Eve, Seth, was born after Cain murdered Abel. He is the only other offspring of Adam and Eve mentioned by name in the Bible. Noah is from the line of Seth.

The book of Genesis tells us that Joseph worked for Potiphar, gaining his trust. It also tells us that Potiphar was a military man and captain of the guards of Pharaoh's palace.

The book of Genesis sets out the creation order of the universe and all in it quite clearly. On day six of the creation, God created man (Adam) and all the animals and creatures of the Earth. The story of the prophet Elijah taken up to heaven is told in 2 Kings 2:11. While he was talking to Elisha, a wind spirited him away into a chariot that was on fire, pulled by horses that were on fire. He was never seen again.

Daniel was a servant in the high office of Darius the Mede. He was hated by Darius' other advisors, who tricked Darius into issuing a decree that said no one other than Darius may be worshipped. Daniel ignored this and, despite his reluctance, Darius had to act. He elected to have Daniel thrown into a lion's den. The next day, he returned to see if Daniel was alive. Daniel had survived, and he explained that he was blameless in God's eyes, therefore God had sent an angel who had bound the lions' mouths shut.

The First Book of Samuel tells of God's plan to establish a monarchy as ruler over the Israelites. That first king is to be Saul, but after a promising start, he is a failure. This paves the way for David to become king, which is described later in the Old Testament.

Once David joined Saul's household, he and Jonathan became friends. As Saul began to sour toward David, it was Jonathan who tried to change his father's mind, but he was unsuccessful. Enoch is not a book of the Old Testament. The Bible makes references to two men named Enoch. One was the son of Cain. The other was the son of Jared and the father of Methuselah, the oldest man in the Bible, who lived for 969 years.

The story of Jacob, Laban and Rachel is told in Genesis 29:16-30. Jacob was tricked by Laban into working 14 years for the hand of Rachel in marriage. And so he worked another seven years to marry Rachel.
