Naming a dog is an important way to make them part of the family. You need a name that everyone in the family can pronounce and that you will never find boring, no matter how many times you say it. The name cannot sound too similar to the names of other family members, especially other pets. Your dog has to be able to hear it, which means it needs to be a name that is easily yelled across a field while you're mad as heck at them for running off. The main challenge is that you need to decide your dog's name before you have had a chance to get to know them. You don't want to call a dog Bounce only to find out that it's the laziest dog on the planet, or name it Muttley when it's actually a $2,500 designer breed.
It might be slightly easier to pick out a doggie name for yourself, however. After all, you know yourself pretty well: your likes and dislikes, whether or not you're a hard worker, how greedy, fastidious or obedient you are.
