About This Quiz
Canada may have a small population for its size, but its vast geographical expanse has allowed for distinct regional differences in the way Canadians speak from sea to shining sea. Depending on where you live, accents can range from barely imperceptible to audibly obvious (and not necessarily because the accent is French or from the East Coast!) Canadians also have a tendency to use region-dependent words to describe everyday objects and places. For example, is a garbage-grinding appliance a garburator or a garbage disposal? Are you headed out to the convenience store or the corner store? Is it a toque or is it a tuque? While you may firmly believe your version is the correct version, there are millions of other Canadians who are just as convinced that their term or pronunciation is the only legitimate option.
Before you take this quiz try to clear your mind of any "right" or "wrong" vocabulary or way of speaking — the more honestly you can answer the questions the more accurate your results will be! You might even discover synonyms for words you didn't even realize had alternate phrases (and you may even finish these questions with a greater understanding of how your fellow Canadian citizens choose to express themselves!)Â
