Mario is a popular video game character who comes from the Mario video game franchise. These games are owned by Nintendo, a Japanese company that has been around for almost forty years. This successful franchise first began with a Donkey Kong game that was released in 1981, and it just expanded from there.
Today the Mario franchise is one of the most successful in the world, with a variety of characters which help keep the games exciting. And with this quiz, we want to test just how much you know about these characters. Sure you'll know the head honcho Mario and his brother Luigi, but could you name all of Mario's friends, as well as those he considers to be his enemies?
Well, we're going to ask you some questions about the gang, as well as show you pictures of what they look like, all to see if you know your Mario characters. Now it won't be easy, but if you've been a fan of the many popular Nintendo games for a while, you should get most of the questions right. Introduced in 1981, Mario, previously known as Jumpman, is the titular protagonist of the Mario series. He is a short Italian plumber who is identified by his brown hair, mustache, blue overalls, red long-sleeved shirt and matching cap with his signature M written on it.
Luigi is the younger twin brother and sidekick of the series' protagonist, Mario. He has a tall, lean appearance and, like his brother, sports brown hair and a mustache. He wears blue overalls with a bright green long-sleeved shirt and a matching cap with his signature L.
Bowser, also known as King Bowser Koopa, is the central villain of the series and the archenemy of the titular character. He is a bipedal tortoise with yellow skin, a large, green shell with yellow spikes, razor-sharp teeth, a patch of red hair and sharp horns protruding from his head.

Princess Peach, also referred to as Princess Peach Toadstool, is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom and the series' primary damsel-in-distress. She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and her primary outfit consists of a long pink dress with short puffy sleeves and long white gloves.
Yoshi is an anthropomorphic dinosaur, Mario and Luigi's sidekick and a tritagonist in many games. He has green skin, a white belly and red ridges on his back. He is able to grab objects with his tongue, which he then swallows and transforms into spotted eggs that can be thrown at enemies.
Toad is a humanoid mushroom and longtime servant and attendant of Princess Peach, who frequently tries to protect her despite his cowardice. He has tanned skin, white pants, brown shoes, a white mushroom cap with red spots and a blue vest lined with yellow.

Wario is the counterpart of Mario, who started as an antagonist but later developed as an anti-hero, eventually becoming the protagonist of his series. He is identified by his short stature, large, pink nose, zig-zag mustache, purple overalls, green shoes, yellow shirt and matching cap with a W.
Waluigi is the partner of Wario and the counterpart and rival of Luigi, who he frequently antagonizes. Unlike his partner, he has a tall and lanky frame and wears his signature grey overalls paired with a purple shirt and cap, yellow-orange shoes and white gloves. His cap has an upside-down L.
Toadette is the female counterpart of Toad. She has a pink cap and pigtails decorated with white spots, a red vest lined with gold worn over a pink shirt, white shorts and brown padded shoes.

Bowser Jr., also known as Koopa Jr. in Japan, is the son of Bowser, the heir of the Fire Kingdom and the series' secondary antagonist. Like his father, he has yellow skin, a green shell with spikes, red hair in a ponytail and a desire to kidnap Princess Peach and defeat Mario.
Daisy, also called Princess Daisy, is the ruler of Sarasaland, the best friend of Princess Peach and the love interest of Luigi. She is recognized by her orange-brown hair, yellow and orange dress with short, puffy sleeves, white gloves, and daisy-shaped earrings and necklace.
Donkey Kong is an anthropomorphic gorilla who was originally an antagonist in the Mario series, later becoming the protagonist in the Donkey Kong franchise. He has dark brown hair all over his body, except for his face, chest, hands and feet, and a long red tie with his initials.

Rosalina is the watcher of the cosmos and the adoptive mother of the Lumas, with whom she lives in the Comet Observatory. She is a sorceress with great power whose sole duty is to guard and look after the universe. She has waist-length blonde hair and wears a long turquoise dress.
Diddy Kong is an anthropomorphic spider monkey and the nephew and sidekick of Donkey Kong. He is the deuteragonist of the Donkey Kong series and the DK crew's second member and second leader. His attire consists of a red cap with the Nintendo logo and a red shirt with gold stars.
Birdo, also called Catherine in Japan, is an anthropomorphic creature who bears a slight resemblance to Yoshi. She has pink skin, a white belly, red ridges on her back and a large red bow on her head. She has a trumpet-shaped mouth which she uses to shoot her signature eggs.

Funky Kong is a member of the Kong family and one of Donkey Kong's friends. He made his debut in the 1994 Donkey Kong Country and has since appeared in several games. He is identified by his black sunglasses, red bandana with white dots, white muscle shirt and jeans shorts.
Shy Guy is a masked enemy. He is short in stature and wears a red suit which covers his hands, a pair of blue shoes and a white mask which he never takes off. Other shy guys come in shades of white, blue, yellow and green.
Baby Mario is the baby counterpart of Mario, who was introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, along with Baby Luigi. His outfit resembles that of adult Mario, except for his lighter colored shoes and shorter overalls which reveal his legs.

Dr. Mario is the doctor version of Mario who appeared in the Nintendo game of the same name. He also appears as an unlockable player in the Super Smash Bros. Melee. He wears a typical doctor's outfit, including a white coat and pants, a red tie and stethoscope. He sometimes carries a clipboard.
The Goomba is one of the most common enemies of the Mario franchise. It is depicted as a small, brown, mushroom-like creature with large eyes, bushy black eyebrows and a pair of fangs protruding from the lower jaw.
King Boo is the sinister, cunning leader and king of the Boos. He is the main antagonist of Luigi. He has the ability to breathe fire, shoot ice, create strong tornado-like breath, jump high and cause objects to appear out of thin air.

Metal Mario is a character who bears a strong resemblance to Mario wearing the Metal Cap. Much like Mario wearing the Metal cap, his body is encased in metal, which increases his weight, grants him super strength and makes him invincible.
Baby Luigi is the infant form of Luigi, who, along with Baby Mario, made his first appearance in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. His baby outfit consists of his signature green shirt and cap, with matching shoes paired with short blue overalls.
Koopa Troopa, a recurring enemy, is an anthropomorphic turtle which comes in four colors - yellow, green, red and blue. Stomping on Koopa Troopa's back will result in him hiding in his shell or being ejected out of it. The shell can be used as a skateboard to glide over water or lava.

Dry Bones are skeletal, undead Koopa Troopas who made their debut in Super Mario Bros. 3. Their appearance consists of a skull with green, glowing pupils, white gloves fitted over skeletal hands, white shoes and a dried out gray-and-brown shell.
Boos are ghosts from the Mario and Yoshi series which are identified by their white, round bodies, razor-sharp teeth, pink tongues, and stubby arms and tails. They attack their opponents when their backs are turned, but when they're looked at they stop mid-attack and turn invisible.
Baby Peach is the infant version of Peach, who is easily recognized by her short blonde hair, large crown on her head, pink dress and matching pacifier, white socks and dark pink shoes. She made her first appearance in the 2005 Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

Petey Piranha, also known as Boss Pakkun in Japan, is a large mutated Piranha, debuting in the Super Mario Sunshine game. He has red-lined yellow leaves which he uses to fly, a white-dotted red head, large green lips, and a green body with appendages resembling arms and legs.
Dry Bowser is an undead version of Bowser who debuted in the New Super Mario Bros. His appearance includes a dry, skinless skeleton with orange, glowing eyes, yellow horns, studded brown bracelets, and a black-and-red shell with dull brown spikes and a white outline.
Pom Pom is a member of Bowser's Koopa Troop - the female version and partner of Boom Boom. She is depicted as having red skin, a pale mouth with short fangs, blonde hair in a green ponytail holder, a red shell with orange spots and her weapon, a white boomerang with a pink bow.

Baby Daisy is the baby version of Daisy, who debuted in the Wii version of Mario Kart. She is depicted with short orange-brown hair with a large yellow crown and matching pacifier, a yellow shirt and shorts with a flower-shaped tutu, white stockings and red-orange shoes.
Iggy, also called Iggy Koopa, is one of the seven Koopalings. He is depicted as a crazed, mechanical genius with a childish personality. He has yellow skin and light green hair that matches his shell, which has a white outline and yellow spikes with blue rings.
Kamek, a Magikoopa, is one of Bowser's high-ranking minions and Yoshi's primary arch-enemy. He wears a blue robe lined with white at the end of the sleeves, a matching cap and black goggles. His magical abilities include teleportation and the ability to enlarge enemies tenfold.

Baby Luma is an anthropomorphic star-shaped being who aided Mario in his quest to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. His special ability is "Spin," which allows him to break crystals, attack enemies and further his jumps.
Cappy is the deuteragonist of Super Mario Odyssey who, along with Mario, rescued his little sister Tiara from Bowser. He has the ability to possess the enemy and other creatures, which allows Mario to take control of them over a certain period.
Lemmy, also known as Lemmy Koopa, is one of the seven Koopalings, a clan of seven siblings who act as leaders of the Koopa Troop. He is the smallest of the group and is easily identified by his rainbow-colored mohawk, crossed eyes and his large, yellow bouncing ball.

Pauline is the damsel-in-distress from the original Donkey Kong, who must be rescued by Mario after being kidnapped by the anthropomorphic ape. Pauline is depicted as having long, brown hair, blue eyes and purple eyeshadow. She wears a long, sleeveless red dress with a matching hat.
Professor E. Gadd is a scientist who helps Luigi save Mario and the mission through the use of his various inventions. He is an old man with a small stature, a patch of white hair on his head, a single tooth in his mouth, a white lab coat, black pants and brown shoes.
Larry, also called Larry Koopa, is the youngest member of the Koopalings clan. He is identified by his yellow skin, blue shell which matches his long, upright hair, green mask, sharp fangs and scepter with an orange crystal embedded in it.

Boom Boom is Bowser's faithful servant, a member of the Koopa Troop and the male partner of Pom Pom. He debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, where he is seen fighting Mario and Luigi. He has an orange head, cream mouth, sharp fangs, yellow skin and a red shell with retractable spikes.
