No doubt about it - if a car maker wants their model to stand out from the crowd, one of the easiest ways to do it is by choosing a door that is different from the norm.
This already was something that car designers latched onto in the early years of motoring. Think of the suicide doors of vehicles from the 1920s and 1930s. Hinged at the rear, they opened the opposite way to a normal door. And the reason why they were called suicide doors? Well, if they opened while the car was traveling and someone tried to catch them, they would invariably be flung into the road by the heavy door. That's how they got their name.
But door designs progressed past that. In the 1950s the gull wing door was seen for the first time. This was not hinged to the body frame but to the roof of the vehicle and opened upwards, making it look like the vehicle had wings.
More door designs followed, including sliding doors, scissor doors and butterfly doors, to name a few.
