Abram and his nephew Lot journeyed while acquiring great wealth, and they could not dwell together. Abram suggested that they should separate, so Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom, and Abram settled in Mamre.

Sodom and Gomorrah grew to be very sinful places, which God despised. Because of Abraham's plea, He spared Lot, his wife and two daughters from destruction. As they departed, they were told not to look back, but Lot's wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.

Due to a famine in the land of Judah, Elimelech took his wife Naomi and their two sons and they journeyed to the land of Moab. After Elimelech and her sons died, Naomi decided that she would return to Judah.

The Valley of Aijalon was a city of Dan that was allotted to the Levite sons of Kohath. There, Joshua declared, "Sun stand thou still upon Gibeon, and thou moon, in the valley of Aijalon."

The third month after the Israelites left Egypt, the people came into the wilderness of Sinai and they settled near the mountain. There, God spoke to Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments.

God spoke to Moses as he came closer to the land of Canaan and told him to send men to spy the land. Negev was the desert region lying to the south of Judea.

Shechem was one of the chief cities of the Canaanites. It was a city in the hill country of Ephraim near the south border of Manasseh. The land was free from war while Joshua was alive.

God called Abram out from the godless location of Haran and instructed him to move to a fertile region called Canaan. The land of Canaan was a central location during much of Israel's history.

After the conquest of Canaan, the land was called Bethlehem-judah. Bethlehem was a town five miles southwest of Jerusalem.

While there, Joshua dreamt of a ladder grounded from the Earth that reached to heaven where the angels of God ascended and descended it. Joshua prepared Israel to cross the Jordan River after spies returned from Jericho with a good report. As priests carried the ark through the Jordan River, the water stopped flowing. The nation of Israel traversed dry ground into the Promised Land.

The cities of refuge were put under Levite control. Six cities were scattered throughout the land. The designated cities east of the Jordan River were Bezer in the tribe of Benjamin, Golan in Manasseh, and Ramoth-Gilead in the tribe of Gad. West of the Jordan were Shechem in Ephraim, Kedesh in the tribe of Naphtali, and Hebron in Judah.

The Canaanites perceived Jericho, which was a symbol of military might, as invincible. Although the city had been fortified with walls nearly 25 feet high and 20 feet dense, God told Joshua that He had given him the city. Joshua was instructed to circle the city once, and to do this for six days.

Joshua granted permission to the tribes of Gad and Reuben to remain in Gilead. The two tribes possessed large numbers of livestock for which the land of Gilead was suitable.

Samuel called Israelites together at Mizpah and pleaded that they pray and fast in regret for their transgressions. Such a gathering was a tempting target for the Philistines, who advanced upon them for an ambush. But God prevented a Philistine victory, and the Israelites defeated the Philistines.

Abraham and King Abimelech argued about the well at Beersheba. Abraham was upset with Abimelech because one of Abimelech's servants had violently taken the well.

Achan, from the tribe of Judah, had kept "cursed things" from the Jericho victory, which angered God. The Lord then allowed thirty-six Ai men to defeat Joshua's army of three hundred men.

David grew tired of running from King Saul, and he sought refuge in the land of the Philistines. David convinced King Achish to provide him sanctuary, and the king gave David Ziklag.

The Valley of Elah separated Israel, who stood on a mountain on one side, and the Philistines, who were positioned on a mountain at the opposite side. The towering Goliath, a victor of the Philistines, challenged the Israelites to a battle.

King Saul and his sons Malchi-shua, Jonathan and Abinadab died at Mount Gilboa. This mount was a row of arid hills on the eastern side of the Plain of Esdraelon.

The Israelites camped near Ebenezer to confront the Philistines in battle, but the Philistines overwhelmed Israel by killing approximately four thousand of their men. The elders of Israel agreed to transport the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh and bring it to the battleground so that they might gain victory.

Michmash was positioned along the route which connected Bethel and Ai eastward down to Jericho. Saul's son Jonathan left the camp at Gibeah and, with his armor bearer, surprised the Philistines, who were so startled that they started killing each other.

Rehoboam was Solomon's son, and under his rulership, the Kingdom of Israel split into two parts: the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom. Only the Israel tribes of Benjamin and Judah remained loyal to Rehoboam, and these two tribes comprised Israel's southern kingdom.

Solomon had built a temple located in Jerusalem, which was the center of worship for the Jews. Jeroboam, who was the king of northern Israel, was deeply concerned that his people would not remain loyal to him if they worshiped in Jerusalem, which was also Judah's capital city.

The Israelites hid themselves from Philistines near rocks and thickets and in caves. Some Israelites traveled to Gilead and Gad; however, Saul remained in Gilgal and waited for Samuel. When Samuel delayed coming, Saul offered up a burnt sacrifice, which was an act that angered God because Saul was not a priest.

The Israelites traveled around Edom and became very discouraged. The people complained and God sent poisonous serpents to punish them. Only by looking at a bronze serpent on a pole could those who were bitten be healed.

The first chapter of the Old Testament book of Jonah at the first through second verses records God's command to Jonah. Nineveh became the capital of the Assyrian empire. According to the Bible, Nineveh was a powerful and wicked city.
