The fast-food industry is massive! Not only in the United States, but around the world. Pretty much any food you can think of is available in a fast food style, but burgers, pizza, nachos, tacos and fries are the staples of the American diet.
And fast food is certainly not as new as you might think. Most people assume fast food was born in the 1950s, after World War II. Well, that period certainly saw a boom in fast food joints with the likes of McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken gaining in popularity. In truth, however, the first real fast food joints can be traced by to the early 1920s with White Castle, still going strong today, seen as the first franchise in this line of the food business.
Today, takeout food is a massive business. In 2016, fast food purchases contributed over $200 billion dollars to the economy, almost a quarter of the overall spend at restaurants. And you know what's best? Gone of the days of just a few restaurants with small menus. Today, there are many different restaurants, each with its own range of menu items.

Who doesn't love a Big Mac? One of McDonald's most sought after meals, the Big Mac was introduced by the chain in 1968. It originally was known the Aristocrat and then the Blue Ribbon Burger before finally having the name we now all know. And what is in that special sauce? Closing in on 100 years old, Krispy Kreme doughnuts come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can include a range of fillings. The company was founded by Vernon Rudolph in 1937 and has over 1,000 locations across the globe.
America's first fast-food chain, sliders have been a White Castle staple since 1921. Served on a 2 x 2-inch bun, even the patty is square. Of course, a slider is nothing without the extras, and the White Castle variety has onions and pickles.
Certainly a smaller take-out chain than most of its competitors, In-N-Out has around 340 stores, mainly on the Pacific coast and in the Southwest. Opened in 1948, In-N-Out operated California's first drive-through hamburger joint.

There certainly isn't anything quite like McDonald's fries. Crispy, salty, long, thin and delicious, they are quite calorie heavy. A medium fries is around 340 calories and also contains plenty of fat, thanks to the frying process. McDonald's fries were first introduced in 1949 and flavored with a special "beef" flavoring.

Shake Shack started out in New York City in 2004 and although still relatively new, now boasts 130 domestic restaurants and 70 outside of the United States. The Shake Burger is fairly simple, but sometimes that's a good thing! It certainly has all you need on a hamburger.

It's not much of a secret anymore, but In-N-Out's "animal style" options provide some interesting variations of some of their menu items. Fries, for example, get drenched in sauce, smothered in cheese and finished with onions. They do clock in at a whopping 750 calories, however.
