Nickelodeon got its start as Pinwheel in 1979, but the cable network devoted to kid-friendly programming really found its groove a decade later. In 1990, Nick was beaming into 52 million U.S. homes. That same year, the company opened its iconic Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Florida. In 1991, Nick developed its first three original cartoons -- "Doug," "Rugrats," and "Ren and Stimpy" premiered on August 11, 1991.
By 1992, kids were settling in on Saturday nights for SNICK, a block of shows including "Clarissa Explains It All, "Kenan and Kel," and "All That." Nickelodeon was also quick to enter the web with the premiere of Nick.com in 1995. Since then, Nick has remained one of the top children's networks in the world, despite countless imitators.
