About This Quiz
It's no wonder the wizarding world is so popular. JK Rowling has created more than a story; she created a dreamland that everyone wants to step into. While we were introduced to some great creatures in the Harry Potter series, the Fantastic Beasts series brings us so much more. We get to see this magical world through the eyes of adults ... and for those of us who grew up with the Harry Potter series, it's nice to see things from a different perspective. Witches and wizards have to get jobs; they have families to provide for, and they have two sets of laws to abide by (muggle laws and those set by the Ministry of Magic). Imagining you live in this world is an excellent way for Earth-bound adults to escape reality just a little bit. The biggest fans of the wizarding world step back into the books and the screenplays to learn even more about what is available to them. They thirst for this creative world, and they need to experience even more.
If that sounds like you, you probably might consider yourself an expert on all things wizarding world (as set by JK Rowling, of course). However, you can only know if you test your skills. Take this quiz to see if you can identify all of these fantastic beasts from a single screenshot.
Centaurs are known to be a little evasive. They can read the stars, and they get a glimpse into the future when they do so. However, they also know that it is dangerous to share this information with those who do not hold their power. The Ministry of Magic restricts where centaurs are allowed to live.
In the books, these creatures mounted a revolution for freedom. What are they?
House-elves are well-known in the wizarding world, as many prominent families (and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry) use them as servants. Though some families and locations treat their house elves well (and even pay them), others believe that they are nothing but slaves.
These nasty guys like to suck out souls. What are they called?
Dementors are most well-known for their work as the prison guards of the wizarding jail, Azkaban. They feed off happiness, and will suck the soul right out of you when they kiss. Little known fact: dementors are actually blind, and find victims off the sense of their happiness.
These little guys are trouble makers. What are they known as?
Cornish pixies are well-known troublemakers in the wizarding world. They play practical jokes on muggles, witches, and wizards alike. One of their favorite things to do is grab humans by the ears. They're usually found in England.
This is one of the most dangerous dragons in the world of Harry Potter. What breed is it?
Common Welsh Green
You may recognize the Hungarian Horntail from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Harry had to steal an egg from one (which is obviously pretty dangerous). Horntails can breathe fire up to 50 feet. They also love to eat humans.
This is a pretty magical creature. What is it called?
The fwooper is an African bird with bright feathers. Fwoopers that are sold at the market have a silencing charm that come with them, because their song (while beautiful) can drive the listener to insanity.
Unicorns can be seen in a lot of mythology, but in the wizarding world (as with many other mythologies), unicorns are considered very pure creatures, and have a lot of magical properties in their horn, hair and blood.
This beast can kill you with just one look. What is it?
A basilisk is an extremely large snake-like creature that can kill you with just one look. The characters who were petrified by the basilisk's gaze in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets all saw the basilisk through different reflections and lenses. Basilisk venom is very powerful and very deadly. The only known cure for it is phoenix tears.
The runespoor comes from Africa. It is a three-headed serpent that can grow up to seven feet long. Dark wizards loved this beast, because it was incredibly intimidating and (let's face it) looks really cool.
This creature has no control over itself. What is it?
Werewolves can be found in nearly every form of lore. They are beasts that were once men. When the men turn, they can no longer control the primal instincts, and will fight their own kind if necessary. Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Remus Lupin was a werewolf in the Harry Potter series.
The graphorn is very dangerous, not just because of its size, but also because its hide can repel most spells. Powdered graphorn horn is used in a lot of different spells, and it's very rare as it is almost impossible to collect.
Merpeople are half fish and half human. They don't necessarily have a great reputation among the wizarding world, because they have warlike tendencies. They also like to drag people under water and drown them. There is a colony living at Hogwarts in the Great Lake.
Only those who have seen death can know the true appearance of these creatures.
Thestrals are carnivorous and don't like to be seen. They look like frightening creatures, with their bony bodies and fangs. However, they are relatively mild-mannered and can be ridden and domesticated.
Hippogriffs are half horse, half eagle, and they can be dangerous if you don't know how to approach them. These proud creatures require you to bow to them when you introduce yourself to ensure that you are good. Once you have a hippogriff's trust, however, they will be loyal to you.
These guys don't get very tall, but they have an important job. What kind of beast is this?
Bowtruckles only grow to about eight inches long. They are meant to guard wand-wood trees. They are masters of camouflage, and almost impossible to spot in their natural habitats. In general, they are mild-mannered creatures, but they can attack if they are attacked.
When he feels threatened, he turns invisible. What is he?
The demiguise is a very peaceful creature, but is also a master of disguise. He can completely disappear when he feels threatened. This has led to a price for its pelts, as they make great invisibility cloaks.
Nifflers look a little bit like moles, and they actually live up to 25 feet below ground. Their best magical ability is their penchant for finding treasure. While they are cute, you should never keep one in a domestic setting, because they can be very destructive.
This guy was seen in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. What is he?
Trolls are known to be pretty stupid creatures. That was one clue to Harry and the gang that something was amiss when a troll entered Hogwarts. Trolls are also very stinky, as they don't have a hygiene regimen.
This beast is the stuff nightmares are made out of. What is it called?
Acromantulas are giant spiders with the ability to speak human tongues. You can find them in Borneo, and they are believed to be created by wizards to help them protect their homes and sacred items. However, the beast is not trained easily, and it is incredibly dangerous.
This bird belongs in the wilds of Arizona. What do you call it?
A thunderbird can create storms as it flies. It is also great at sensing danger. Its tail feathers can be made into wand cores. When a wand is made from thunderbird feathers, it is best used for transfiguration.
This magical insect is used in a lot of potions. What is it called?
The billywig is known for having wings on its head. This allows it to spin while it flies. If you are stung by the billywig, you will become giddy, and possibly levitate. This can be permanent if you are allergic to billywigs.
