One of the great game fish, blue marlin come in two species, Atlantic and Pacific. These fish have a sharp bill which is used when hunting. Elephant seals are divided into two species - the north and south elephant seal. The northern species live in the waters around California, generally near off-shore islands. The other species live in the Antarctic. These seals migrate each year in the search for food.

A member of the ray family, which incidentally are related to sharks, the stingray is graceful sea dweller that 'flies' underwater as it moves. Like many other rays, it has a long, thin tail. Belonging to the same family as starfish and sea urchins, the sea cucumber is broken up into 1,250 different species. Some live in shallow water while others are found at much deeper depths. Certainly not the prettiest fish in the sea, the goblin shark is noted for its prominent snout and its jaws with razor-sharp teeth below that. Goblin sharks can grow up to four meters in length and weigh around 200kgs. They are characterized as a 'living fossil'.

Commonly referred to as the blowfish, these ocean dwellers are a delicacy in Japan. They are very poisonous, however, and have to be prepared correctly with chefs training for years to do so. Pufferfish can grow up to two feet in length.

The smallest dolphins in the world, Hector's dolphins are critically endangered with only around 7,000 left in the wild. Sadly, there are also only 55 left of the Maui's dolphin, a sub-species.

There are many species of lobster in the world's oceans. These crustaceans are noted for their large tails, two claws and five pairs of legs. Lobsters are a delicacy around the world and prized for their sweet-tasting meat. They also molt, with the process seeing them leave their hard exoskeleton behind after a new one forms.

This species of deepwater shark is a filter feeder. Not much is known about them, they were only discovered in 1976. Only 63 of this elusive species of shark have even been caught or sighted since then.

This massive fish is the largest bony fish found in the sea. Weighing up to 2000kg and growing 3m in length, Sunfish have to large fins but no tail. Also referred to as Pacific sardines, these sardines are found throughout the Pacific where they feed on plankton, small crustaceans, and fish larvae. They are commercially fished and used as animal feed, fish oil and for human consumption.

With its hammer-shaped head, there is no mistaken this unique-looking shark. Interestingly, unlike other shark species, hammerheads will actually swim together in groups.

An eight-armed mollusk, an octopus is a wonderful creature that uses a special body part called a siphon for both breathing and propulsion as well. An octopus can expel ink when threatened. They can also squeeze through the narrowest of openings.

Sadly, these massive turtles have seen their numbers decreasing as they are often a bycatch in fishing nets. Loggerheads are found mostly in the Mediterranean Sea.

From the crustacean family, barnacles attach themselves to rocks, jetties and even living creatures such as whales. There are 1,220 different barnacle species found in the world's oceans.

Reaching up to 40 feet at times, the whale shark is the largest fish found in the ocean. These are filter feeders and do not prey on any other fish. They can live for 70 years and can weigh up to 20 tons.

This primitive prehistoric fish was thought to have died out with the dinosaurs. Then in 1938, one was caught off the coast of South Africa. More have been found, especially off the Comores where they live at depths of up to 2,300m. Coelacanths are considered to be 'living' fossils.

With their ability to leap out of the water and glide using their special wing-like fins, flying fish have captured the imagination of seafarers for centuries. The longest period in flight for a fish of this nature is an incredible 45 seconds. Interestingly, there are 64 species of flying fish.

Also known as the Orca, the killer whale is easily recognized thanks to its beautiful black and white markings. These large creatures swim together in pods and have been known to kill great white sharks but generally feed on seals and other fish.

Many people think the Portuguese man o' war is a jellyfish but it is not. It is a siphonophore made up of a host of organisms. A giant of the deep, humpback whales can reach up to 16m in length and weigh a staggering 39 tons. These massive mammals are a favorite for whale watchers and are known to "breach," an activity where the whale launches itself out of the water. Incredibly, humpback whales migrate around 25,000km each year.

With their tooth-filled, funnel-shaped mouth used to attach to fish and suck their blood, lamprey have a frightening reputation. Many people think they are part of the eel family but they are actually parasitic fish. There are around 38 known species of lamprey.

Sometimes referred to as the longsnout seahorse, they are found in the tropical waters of the Atlantic ocean, the longsnout seahorse grows to around 18cm in length. This seahorse species comes in a range of colors including yellow, brown or white among others. They are easily distinguished thanks to their dark spots that cover their body, no matter their color.

Often called sea cows, manatees can grow to 13 feet in length and weigh up to 1,300 pounds. These slow-moving mammals never leave the water, but like other aquatic mammals must breathe air to survive. Sadly, their numbers have declined over the years due to hunting.

This fish is found in a number of oceans around the world where they live at depths of up to 3,850 meters. They grow up to about 2.3m in length and can weigh up to 10kg, although bigger specimens have been fished.

The apex predator of the deep, the great white shark is much maligned. This is because it is responsible for a number of attacks on humans. These, however, are often because the sharks mistake humans for food. Just think how a person in a wetsuit might seem like a seal to a great white. They can grow up to 5 meters in length and weigh over 1000kgs on average.

There are a number of species of this eel, from the Snyder's moray that grows to around 10 cm in length to the slender giant moray that grows up to 4 meters. The heaviest of these eels is the giant moray which grows to around 3 meters and weights 30 kgs. Morays have a reputation for biting, but this comes from divers feeding them and the eels having poor eyesight, thus mistaking fingers for food.

Did you know that the sperm whale has the largest brain of any creature on earth? Their heads are also filled with a substance known as spermaceti. Scientists aren't exactly sure what it does. Sperm whales grow to around 60ft in length and can weigh up to 45 tons.

These sleek, fearsome fish can reach up to 7 feet in length. They in live tropical and subtropical waters near reefs where they feed on fish of all sizes, using their impressive speed to catch their prey and tear them to shreds with their sharp teeth.

Living in colonies, coral are marine invertebrates that join together to form reefs in the ocean. Most coral feed through photosynthesis although some larger species have been known to catch and devour small fish.

Also referred to as the giant spined star, this species of starfish is found along the coast of California right up to British Columbia. These starfish can grow up to 60cm in diameter and come in an array of colors including red, brown and even purple.

Found in the North Atlantic, these seals grow up to 3.3m long and can weigh over 300 kgs. There are easily identified thanks to their large snouts and by the fact that they do not have external ear flaps.

These invertebrates are easy to identify thanks to their outer shells that look like a horseshoe. Their blood, which is blue in color, is actually harvested to make limulus amebocyte lysate. This is used to make medical products. Over 500,000 crabs are bled a year, a process which does not kill them.
