When you hear the word "toxic," you may think of Brittney Spears. But you should be thinking of things that are harmful to your health. Even some foods are toxic foods, meaning they can make you sick, incapacitate you, or even kill you if you eat them. Whether a food gives you a slight stomachache or sends you to the hospital, it is considered toxic. But the level of toxicity often depends not only on the type of dangerous chemical you eat but also the amount you consume.

We'll also include a description of the food, the part you would eat and whether the food is raw or cooked. Then you tell us whether you think the foods are safe to eat or not.

Known for their pungent odor and taste, onions contain antibacterial properties which detox and cleanse the body. Eating this vegetable can help reduce the effects of several medical conditions, including cancer, asthma, heart disease, tooth decay and diabetes.

Apples have tiny seeds that are found near the center of the fruit. But are they dangerous?
Apple seeds, when eaten in large quantities, can be very poisonous because they contain a plant compound called amygdalin. A compound of cyanide and sugar, amygdalin degrades into hydrogen cyanide, but only if the seeds are chewed or digested. However in small amounts, the seeds are actually quite harmless.
Raw garlic has a strong smell. Is it toxic?
Like onions, raw garlic has a strong odor, but it offers many proven health benefits. From combating illnesses such as the common cold to reducing blood pressure, garlic can also improve cholesterol levels and remove heavy metals in the body.
Lima beans are tasty when cooked, but are they safe when raw?
Lima beans contain a substance called linamarin. When eaten raw, the linamarin in the beans turns into hydrogen cyanide, which is toxic. Cooking them removes any harmful effects.
Fresh cranberries offer a nice, tart taste. But are the dried ones good to eat or not?
Dried cranberries contain the same nutrients as fresh cranberries, though the levels of vitamins A and C are significantly lower due to the commercial drying process. They have anti-inflammatory properties that help your body fight infections and boost your overall health.
Do you think you can eat lots of raw rhubarb leaves?
Though its fleshy, edible stalks are quite healthy, rhubarb leaves are different. They contain very high levels of oxalic acid, which, if eaten, can quickly lead to kidney failure in humans. But for this to happen, you have to eat at least eleven pounds of rhubarb leaves.

A member of the nightshade family, is raw eggplant dangerous to eat?
Eggplants are a member of the nightshade family, and they can contain up to 11mg of a poisonous compound called solanine. In order to cause harm, however, you would have to eat nearly 36 raw eggplants, which could then cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, headache and fever.
Do you know whether pumpkin seeds are okay to eat?
Unlike apple seeds, pumpkin seeds are very safe and healthy to consume. These small seeds are packed with nutrients including zinc, magnesium and healthy fats. Pumpkin seeds may help improve prostate health, heart health and reduce your risk of certain cancers.

Strawberries are small, heart-shaped fruits, identified by their red appearance, small yellow seeds and green leaves. Like cranberries, they're very high in antioxidants and manganese .

There is still an ongoing debate as to whether apricot seeds are fatal or not. Some think they can put cancer into remission, but that has not been proven. Much like apples, apricot seeds contain amygdalin, which is converted to cyanide by the body and which can poison you.

When cooked, taro is a healthy staple that is commonly found in many tropical climates such as Hawaii and the Caribbean. However, it should not be consumed raw due to the presence of calcium oxalate, which has been linked to kidney stones and gout.
