About This Quiz

The history of the United States officially starts 241 years ago, but it actually goes back much farther than that. In order to truly understand how this country of ours came to be where it is today, you have to be well-informed about the factors that went into its creation, and then all of the events that occurred since.

Sadly, history is often poorly-taught. Many textbooks are inaccurate or biased, as James W. Loewen proved in his important text "Lies My Teacher Told Me." Others are excessively focused on the deeds of the rich and powerful, or simply on certain demographics, meaning that they diminish the role of the common man or woman and erase the contributions of people of color, as Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" showed us. The downside is that this means you can pass high school history without knowing too much about the subject.

The good news is you really don't need to be an expert to do well on a baseline test. This quiz will ensure we only take the most accurate questions from that high school exam and see if you're able to recall events correctly. Let's see how you do!
