Schools in the conference have won championships and various recognitions while producing some of the most outstanding players and graduates to ever come through college athletics. The ACC is one of the top conferences in college athletics. Schools from the conference have been a part of multiple championships across a variety of sports.
The founding members of the ACC were originally part of the Southern Conference. The move was largely due to a ban on post-season play for teams in the Southern Conference.
Georgia Tech did not join the ACC until 1979, which excluded its football team at the time. Tech's football team was added to the conference in 1983.

Steve Spurrier coached South Carolina's football team from 2005 until his retirement in 2015. He introduced a pass-heavy offense to the team, which helped him win more games than any other coach in South Carolina history.
Jimbo Fisher coached Florida State to a National Championship in 2013, the final year before the College Football Playoffs began. At the end of the 2017 season, Fisher surprised everyone by leaving the school to take the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Notre Dame's football team is only partially part of the conference. They play five rotating opponents from the ACC each year.

The Miami Hurricanes launched onto the college football landscape in the 1980s, winning three National Championships during the decade. The Miami teams of that era were known for their attitude and physical play.
Since 1980, Duke has been coached in men's basketball by Mike Krzyzewski. Krzyzewski is one of the most respected coaches in all of basketball, coaching three U.S. Olympic teams to gold medals.
After leaving college, Tony Dorsett was taken by the Dallas Cowboys with the second pick in the 1977 NFL draft. He would have a Hall of Fame career, which included four Pro Bowl appearances and a Super Bowl at the end of his rookie season.

The downfall of the Big East Conference was initiated by the separation between "football" and "non-football" schools in the conference. This split brought about tension, partially over revenue shares.
Bobby Bowden built up a Florida State program that was pretty much non-existent before he got there. He coached the school from 1976 until 2009, winning two National Championships.
Duke has had one of the most successful college basketball programs in the country, particularly in the last four decades. This is partially due to star players who have gone through the program such as J.J. Redick, Shane Battier and Grant Hill.

Leading into games, Clemson players have a tradition of running down the hill on the east side of the stadium. Howard's Rock is located there, which players rub for good luck.
Roy Williams has been the head coach at North Carolina since 2003. He's led the team to three NCAA Tournament championships, with his first coming in 2005.
Michael Vick was one of the most explosive athletes to come through college football. That's one of the reasons he was taken with the first pick in the 2001 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Wake Forest has found most of its recent success in athletics with the women's field hockey team. The team won three straight championships from 2002 through 2004.
Michael Jordan was drafted third overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984 NBA draft. He went on to dominate the NBA, winning six NBA championships throughout the '90s.
The Syracuse men's basketball team is coached by Jim Boeheim, who's been the head coach for the school since 1976. Boeheim also played for the school in the '60s before joining on as an assistant coach.

After averaging over 14 points and 6 assists her junior year, Dawn Staley was named the Naismith College Player of the Year in 1991. With a repeat performance, she earned the award again in 1992.
Rick Pitino coached the Louisville men's basketball team from 2001 until 2017. Pitino was fired in 2017 for a pay-for-play scandal that took place in his program.
Deion Sanders knew how to put on a performance, particularly when the lights were shining the brightest. With the ability to turn it on under pressure, he earned the nickname "Primetime."

Boston College has been one of the elite teams in men's ice hockey over the years. The team currently has five NCAA championships, with the latest coming in 2012.
Shirley Clements Mewborn Field replaced the Yellow Jackets' previous softball stadium, Glenn Field. It also doubled the seating for spectators.
Throughout his college career, Lamar Jackson proved he was as explosive an athlete as the football world had ever seen. He racked up over 9,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards while in college.

Jameis Winston's career, both in college and in the NFL, has been stained by off-the-field issues. Critics claim Jimbo Fisher, his former head coach, was too lenient on him in college, which has extended to his professional career.
North Carolina defeated Gonzaga in the final game of the NCAA Tournament to capture the championship in 2017. Joel Berry II was named the MVP of the game after putting up 22 points and 6 assists.
Maryland left the ACC in 2014 when college realignment was running rampant. The school joined the Big 10 instead.

To the surprise of many, Calvin Johnson left the NFL after only nine seasons in the league. He was still one of the most productive receivers when he retired, putting up over 1,000 yards receiving each year.
Despite not having a softball team, Miami's baseball team has been quite productive throughout its history. The team currently has four championships, with the first coming in 1982.
The Cavaliers have dominated in multiple sports from lacrosse to tennis. However, the school has the most championships in men's soccer.

Despite not playing each other from 2000 through 2016, the rivalry between Pitt and Penn State is one of the most intense in college football. Penn State currently leads the series, which is known as "The Keystone Classic."
Lane Stadium is one of the fiercest places to play in college football. ESPN ranked it #2 in their "Top 10 Scariest Places to Play."
Few expected Clemson to defeat Alabama in the 2017 National Championship. However, Deshaun Watson refused to give in throughout the game, taking hit after hit, and ultimately, Clemson won the game 35-31.

The Jimmy V Foundation was set up in honor of Jimmy Valvano, whose fight with cancer was well-documented. The foundation raises money each year to help with cancer research.
