One Tree Hills was fictionally located in Tree Hill, North Carolina. It followed the life of two half-brothers and other American teenagers.

One Tree Hill was primarily filmed in and around Wilmington, North Carolina. Many of the scenes were shot near the battleship USS North Carolina. In later seasons, many scenes were filmed in and on the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus.

One Tree Hill premiered in 2003. The series premiered to 2.5 million viewers and rose to 3.3 million in its second week. It was one of only three shows to rise in their second episode during the 2003–2004 television season.

One Tree Hill's opening theme song was "I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw. The theme was removed from the opening in the fifth season. The executive producer said that this was to lower production costs, to add more time for the storyline. The theme was restored for Season 8, in response to audience demand, and was sung by different artists each week.

The show is notable for being one of the rare occasions for a teen drama where no episodes dipped below one million viewers and suffered flagging ratings in later seasons. Season One went on to average 3.5 million viewers, and the second season was the highest rated in the series, averaging 4.3 million viewers weekly and a 1.9 Adults 18–49 rating.

One Tree Hill was on television for 9 seasons. The show premiered in 2003 and was on the air until 2012. In that time, 187 episodes aired.

Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray met while filming the show and married on Apr. 16, 2005. Sadly, their relationship wasn't meant to be. They divorced in 2006.

One Tree Hill originally followed the lives of half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott. They shared basketball as a common interest.

Chad Michael Murray played Lucas Scott in One Tree Hill. Murray was the first person cast for One Tree Hill. He declined to play Nathan and was instead cast as Lucas.

James Lafferty played character Nathan Scott on One Tree Hill. Lafferty was chosen to play Nathan partly because of his skill at basketball.

The name "One Tree Hill" was taken from a U2 song of the same name. The creator, Mark Schwahn, was inspired while listening to U2's Joshua Tree album. (The song itself is named after One Tree Hill, a volcanic cone in the city of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. The tree was removed in 2000 after being attacked in 1994. However, the location is still known as One Tree Hill, or, more recently, its Maori name: Maungakiekie.)

Episode titles were all names of songs and albums titles. Artists whose album name and song title were featured were sometimes heard on the soundtrack, but not always. Music was such a huge part of the show that the fictional club Tric was written into the show in Season 2, so the writers could feature more bands and artists.

One Tree Hill was one of a few shows in television history to jump the story's time line into the future. They jumped 4 1/2 years into the future between seasons 4 and 5. Other shows to do this include Alias (2001), which jumped ahead two years in the future at the end of its second season and Wonder Woman (1975), which jumped from the 1940s to the 1970s after the first season.

Moira Kelly, who played Karen Roe, became pregnant after the pilot was shot. The executive producer, Mark Schwahn, didn't want to write the pregnancy into the show at the time, so they used an array of props to hide her belly.

The only actors who appeared in both the pilot episode and the finale episode were James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Lenz, Lee Norris and Antwon Tanner.

Haley was initially introduced as Lucas Scott's best friend. Later she became his sister-in-law, upon her marriage to Nathan Scott in their junior year of high school. Haley was also a singer and her first song was Elsewhere.

The most popular season of One Tree Hill was the second season. It averaged 4.3 millions viewers each week and was the 117th ranked show for the 2004-2005 television season. The lowest rated season was the eighth, which ranked as the #138 most-watched show and averaged only 1.8 million viewers. Season 9 was ranked at #180 but had 55k more viewers.

Haley married Nathan in Season 3. She became pregnant with her second child in Season 8. The actor, Bethany Joy Lenz, was pregnant in real life during Season 8 as well.

Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush) was not cast until after the pilot episode was greenlit. Brooke made her first appearance in The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most.

Seasons 1-4 are known as the high school years. At Season 5, the series jumped four-and-a-half years in the future. Season 5 and forward are therefore known as the adult years, when the old friends returned to their North Carolina hometown.

Nathan was due to be drafted by the Seattle Sonics. He was going to be 10th pick. After his recovery, he played as the point guard for the Charlotte Bobcats.

Lucas wrote a novel called "An Unkindness of Ravens.” The book was a major success and garnered Lucas widespread recognition as an accomplished author. The first person Lucas presented a copy of his book to was classmate Glenda Farrell, followed shortly thereafter by Peyton Sawyer and the rest of his friends.

Keith Alan Scott was the big brother of Dan Scott and the stand-in father to Lucas Scott. He was the paternal uncle to both Lucas and Lucas' younger half-brother Nathan. Out of jealousy, Keith was later murdered by Dan, right before Karen found out she was pregnant with their daughter, Lily Roe Scott. Keith was seen in later episodes as a spirit watching over his loved ones.

In Season 1, Karen was accepted at a cooking school in Italy, to which she had applied months before. Surprised, she was faced with the reality that she couldn't go because she had too many obligations. However, with Keith's offer to look after Lucas, Deb's offer to look after the cafe, and Lucas' persuasion to go, Karen had no further reason to decline the offer. At the airport before her six-week trip, she kissed Keith, hoping to start a relationship on her return.

Clothes Over Bros was the fashion line created by Brooke Davis in high school, as a distraction after jeopardizing her relationship with Lucas Scott. By the fifth season, Clothes Over Bros had grown into a multi-million-dollar fashion empire, with Brooke and her mother Victoria at the helm.

The website was used in many episodes. Peyton usually sat at her desk on her webcam, thinking, drawing, or listening to music. Lucas Scott was known to look at the website frequently, as he was in love with her.

Tree Hill Record Shop was owned by Max. It was visited by many of Tree Hill's music-loving residents. Chris Keller was employed by Max and worked alongside him while waiting for his musical career to take off. One of the shop's most frequent visitors was Peyton Sawyer.

In Season 2, Karen angrily confronted Dan at the dealership, Dan grabbed her and forcefully kissed her, saying "Isn't that was this is really about?" At the end of the season, Dan became unconscious after drinking a poisoned bottle of whiskey that was left for him with a note that said, "for everything you've done." The dealership was then set on fire with Dan inside. Dan later found out it was Deb, trying to get revenge.

Chris Keller was a musician from Tree Hill who noticed Haley James Scott's talent and helped her at the start of her music career. He later left Tree Hill to go on tour, running into the group when he passed through Honey Grove, Texas. Eventually, he returned to Tree Hill to help Haley with Red Bedroom Records and assisted Dan and Julian in their rescue mission.
