About This Quiz

Some of the earliest recipes for mayonnaise date back to the early 1800s, but it's suspected this thick gooey substance may be even older. After all, it's just an emulsion of oil and egg yolk, so it's very likely that if anyone had been cooking with those two ingredients previously, they stumbled on this long ago. It just took some appreciative mayo fans a while to write the recipe down. In time, it evolved to have some more pizzazz, a little lemon juice, maybe some other flavors tossed in for fun until you get to modern times. Today you can walk into a grocery store and get yourself a bottle of Dijonnaise or Mayochup if you want.

Some people swear by mayonnaise on grilled cheese sandwiches, some can't make a dip that isn't 50% mayo. You need it to strike to the heart of a potato salad, or macaroni salad, or tuna salad — just a whole lot of salads, really. But it manages to get into recipes for everything from fried chicken to chocolate cake as well. How much mayo you're willing to tolerate says a lot about who you are, and we're pretty sure if you're down for more than half of these, you're a straight mayo monster. There's one way to find out. Take the quiz!
