A totem animal, by definition,  could be an object, animal, person or symbol. They are supposed to accompany an individual during their lifetime and help guide them with many aspects of their life. The Native Americans believed that different animals called forth different powers, and it is the same with our mythical beings. And although their beliefs tend to stick to animals that actually exist, we don't see anything wrong with adding in a dragon or two to make things more interesting.
