Schmidt's lifelong correspondence with Michael Keaton (letters as a kid, then emails as an adult) revolves around his obsession with Batman. Sadly, it turns out the letters were actually from his mother, Nick and Jess.
The indie duo She & Him, consisting of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, has Deschanel on lead vocals and Ward on guitar. They were nominated for a Grammy in 2012 for their song "So Long" from "Winnie the Pooh."
Jess grew up in Oregon. The gang returns to her old Portland stomping grounds to attend the wedding of her father in an episode full of romantic arcs and sweeps stunts.

Single on Valentine's Day, Jess tries to find a no-strings fling with an attractive stranger. After nearly choking to death on a cherry, she ends up with a guy who really likes talking about lunch.
Max Greenfield starred in several episodes of "American Horror Story: Hotel," looking decidedly un-Schmidt with bleached blond hair, a nasty drug habit and some other things we can't repeat here.
In season 2, Jess loses her teaching job and takes a job as shot girl for Schmidt's party. She quits after she makes a customer choke when she's pouring liquor down his throat and talking to him at the same time.

Jess becomes a Pistons fan when she tries to become friends with Coach. This doesn't go over well with Nick, a lifelong Chicago Bulls fan.
Schmidt's arachnophobia birthed a season 4 episode called "Spiderhunt," where the gang searches for a spider that's loose in the loft. In real life, the actor who portrays Schmidt is terrified of birds.
Amanda Bynes, star of "All That" and "The Amanda Show," was originally in the running for the role of Jess. As we all know now, that role went to Zooey Deschanel.

Schmidt is forced to make a donation to the Douche Bag Jar for removing his shirt to show off his abs in front of Cece. The Douche Bag Jar is an ongoing effort to correct Schmidt's unappealing behavior.
As Jess and Cece leave in their limo to go to a party at Prince's house, Nick yells "I love you!" to Jess. Jess, to her horror, responds with finger guns. When she relates the tale later, Prince tells her he is "not familiar with finger guns."
"New Girl" fans may remember Jess sobbing on the couch, watching "Dirty Dancing" over and over. They may also remember the gang taking her out that night and singing "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" to cheer her up.

Deschanel founded the website HelloGiggles along with partners Molly McAleer and Sophia Rossi in 2011. The site covers culture, fashion, careers, female empowerment, relationships and other issues relating to young women's lives.
Schmidt lost his party bus to Frankie Muniz. He was disappointed, as the bus had both a stripper pole and a steering wheel in the shape of a boob. Jess later rents him a school bus to make up for his loss.
Damon Wayans Jr. was so sure his show "Happy Endings" would be cancelled, he signed onto "New Girl." However, it was renewed, so Lamorne Morris (Winston) replaced him. When "Happy Endings" was eventually cancelled, "New Girl" welcomed Wayans back in season 3.

If you don't hear a cast member actually say the word "bear," you can usually see a picture or a poster of a bear somewhere during an episode.
Nobody is sure what Jess's costume actually is, but everyone seems to settle on Zombie Woody Allen — with the exception of Nick, who goes with "sexy undead driver's ed teacher." Spoiler: He later gets a punch in the face by that undead teacher.
During the flashback episode "Virgins," everyone tells each other about the time they lost their virginity. Cece pretty much wins the night when she reveals she lost her virginity to Mick Jagger when he was on tour in Portland.

After Winston and his girlfriend Daisy break up, Winston takes her cat Furguson because he thinks the cat deserves better. He considers Furguson to be one of his best friends.
Kaitlin Olson of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" fame appears in this episode as the fiancee of Jess' dad — as well as a former high school rival of Jess and Cece. Needless to say, Jess doesn't take this well.
Jess mistakenly exchanges dirty texts and sets up a date with Bearclaw, thinking he is actually another guy named Andy. Bearclaw got his name from a bad self-done tattoo of a paw print on his lower back. His character was inspired by a writer's experience dating a guy with the same nickname.

J.D. Salinger wrote "Franny and Zooey" in 1961. Zooey is actually a male character, and Franny is his younger sister. The book spent 25 weeks at the top of the New York Times best sellers list.
When Jess notices her student Briana's science fair robotic arm in the YouTube video, she rips it off after class. She and Winston later try to fix it, but it dies at the science fair. Jess confesses and later the two sing a duet in front of the class called "Let Me Lift You Up With My Robot Arm."
After Cece gets traditional henna tattoos on her hands for her wedding, she takes a nap at the behest of Jess. Unfortunately, she falls asleep with her face on one of her hands, waking up with the henna tattoo imprinted on her face.
