The head of state of the Canadian government is actually the reigning monarch of England. Queen Elizabeth II must sign all bills into law, and officially dissolve parliament, which is done through the Governor General of Canada, her representative.

Cartes pursued studies in aeronautical engineering in America. As a young man of 19 years, he started a currency exchange business that was extremely successful. He went on to buy or help establish 25 companies. Interestingly he served jail time while under investigation for currency fraud. In one instance the case was dropped and in the other he was cleared by the court. Already a wealthy man, he stated in his inaugural speech that he had not entered politics as a career or to get wealthier but rather to serve his people. King John, the brother of Richard the Lionheart, has become part of the legend of Robin Hood. Always cast as the villain, there is no evidence to show that King John was any worse or better than other monarchs of the time, including King Richard.

Early in his Presidency, Castro spoke against communism, saying that he was for democracy. During the Eisenhower presidency, he was refused a meeting. He was Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and then became President from 1976-2008. Castro attended Catholic universities before graduating from the University of Havana with a degree in law. He was well known (among other things) for his amazingly long and intense public speeches.
Ho Chi Minh was the first leader of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. To some, he was (and still is) a patriotic figure who used the Communist doctrine and strategy as a means of freeing his people, but whose basic instincts were democratic and humanitarian. To others, he was a scheming revolutionary who pretended to be well meaning and concerned about the welfare of people in order to manipulate enemies and rivals and set the stage for the creation of a totalitarian regime. There is still wide controversy over him in Vietnam today.

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) became the first president of South Africa on 10 May 1994 following ground-breaking elections which allowed citizens of all races to vote for the first time. He held the position until his retirement in 1999 and was also the President of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997. Mandela, a member of the Thembu people, earned acclaim both at home and abroad for his opposition to apartheid and subsequent focus on reconciliation, despite having spent 27 years of his life in prison for his political views and the militant actions he took in support of them. 'A Long Walk to Freedom' was the title of Mandela's autobiography.
Abdurrachman Wahid (popularly known by his nickname Gus Dur), was the first Indonesian president selected in a normal way by parliament on October 20, 1999, following Indonesia's first free and fair election. His party, PKB (the National Awakening Party) only received 12% of the vote (the leading party had 33%) among the 48 parties in the election. During a very divided parliament session to choose the president, Gus Dur emerged as a compromise candidate, and was selected as president.
The Jamaican head of state is the Queen of England. Much like Canada, Jamaica is a Commonwealth country and thus is a representative monarchy with the Queen at the top of the ruling tree.

Russia was part of the G8, but with economic sanctions against their country, they left the union. Now called the G7, the nations are; USA, France, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy and Japan
The G20 has the head of states meet and discuss economics. The group is designed to be the G7, plus middle class countries to have a world forum on economics.
The League of Nations was the forum that predated the UN. However, it failed to materialize anything concrete due to a lack of enforceable actions and lacked major world players as the US and Russia were both not included.

A bilateral summit is a meeting between two World Leaders. For instance, the Chinese President and Canada's Prime Minister had a bilateral summit last week, when the Chinese stopped in Ottawa for meetings.

Queen Victoria was born in Kensington Palace London on 24 May 1819 and died on 22 January 1901. Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was elected President of France in 1848 and proclaimed himself Emperor (Napoleon III) in 1851. He was deposed in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, when he and about 30,000 men were taken prisoner by the Prussians at Sedan. (The French thereupon proclaimed a republic). His son, the Prince Imperial (Crown Prince) Eugene was killed in the Zulu war while serving in the British army.
William Pitt the Elder was PM 1766-68. His son, Pitt the Younger became prime minister at the age of 24, the youngest person ever to hold the office. He was PM 1783-1801 and 1804-06.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has owned a Harley Davidson and an Indian motorcycle. He rode bikes in three movies, "Raw Deal", "Terminator II" and "Terminator III". He had three goals as a kid: move to America, become an actor and marry a Kennedy. He accomplished all three goals. He is also served as the Californian Governor, and would have been a popular President pick if he had been born in the USA.
Pearson's minority government introduced universal health care, student loans, the Canada Pension Plan, the Order of Canada, and the current Canadian flag. During his tenure, Prime Minister Pearson also convened the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957. He got the Peace Prize for his efforts to mediate during the 1956 Suez Canal Crisis. Pearson would not support the British-French invasion of the Suez Canal because it did not have UN sanctions. He was also defending Canada which had not been called for its decision in spite of its Commonwealth role.
Lech Kaczynski became president of Poland in December 2005. Although his twin brother Jaroslaw's Law and Justice party had won the September 2005 parliamentary election, Jaroslaw did not immediately become prime minister, that post going instead to Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz. When Marcinkiewicz resigned in July 2006, Lech appointed Jaroslaw as prime minister.

Tony Abbott's father was English and his mother Australian. He was born in London in 1957 and moved to Sydney with his parents in 1960. He was a Rhodes scholar at the Queen's College, Oxford where he pursued a number of degrees. Interestingly, Abbott became a seminarian with the intention of entering the priesthood. However, after training for some time he came to the conclusion that he would not be an effective priest. In the 1990s he became actively involved in politics and served in varied capacities.
Dag Hammarskjöld was killed in a plane crash in September 1961, while on his way to what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His aim was to broker a peace deal between the government and the leader of the breakaway province of Katanga, but his plane came down in Northern Rhodesia (now known as Zambia). As the cause of the crash was never fully determined, much speculation remains over whether it was an accident or an assassination. In September 2013, the Hammarskjöld Commission recommended that the inquiry into the former Secretary-General's death be reopened.
Angela Merkel trained as a physical chemist after growing up in the former East Germany. As mentioned, she became leader of the Christian Democratic Union Party in 2005. In 2005, in a grand coalition with the Social Democrats, Merkel became the first female leader of Germany. Her political authority was reinforced by her re-election in 2009 where she increased her party's majority, in coalition with the Free Democrats.

David Edward Sutch was a musician, entertainer and would-be political candidate. Sutch was born in 1940 and died after committing suicide in 1999. He grew up poor in North London living with his working mother and no father. Beginning in the early 1960s, Screaming Lord Sutch performed a horror-inspired rock and roll show, often dressing up as Jack the Ripper and setting a tone that heavy metal and Goth acts have followed over ensuing decades. As a musician, Sutch's career can be summed by the fact that while Jimmy Page, John Bonham and Jeff Beck performed on the 1970 album "Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends" the album was selected by the BBC as the "worst album of all-time" in 1998.
