For some 10-year-olds, having an active imagination can be a blessing, and Ash Ketchum is no exception. He has one quest and one quest alone: to become the most skilled Pokemon Trainer of all time! The thing is, he has a couple of issues from the get-go. First, his dad was already a pretty kick-butt Trainer, so there's this pressure to be even better than him, and Ash's starter Pokemon, Pikachu, isn't necessarily the best. Yes, he's absolutely adorable, and simply charming to boot, but he can be a little temperamental, especially when he first starts his adventure with Ash. But even though there are many times when Ash gets bested by other trainers, his love for his Pokemon never fades.

With Ash and Pikachu, mutual respect develops quickly. Unlike many of the other Pokemon, Pikachu is rarely in a PokeBall, instead traveling by his master's side. And when another Pokemon is in trouble, Ash usually consults with Pikachu about what path to take. Instead of showing us a typical master and pet relationship, the two have been one of the most fun teams to watch as they grow. But, of course, if it weren't for the cast of colorful characters we meet, Ash and Pikachu's relationship wouldn't be as cool as it is.
