In 1972, Francis Coppola helped author, Mario Puzo, put his 1969 novel The Godfather to screen. After becoming a best-seller on paper, the two had no choice but to put it in live-action. Starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, the film followed the mafia family, the Corleones. 

The film would go on to be considered one of the best ever made. Not only did it become the top-grossing film of its year, but the film went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations, winning Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and the biggest award of the night, Best Picture. The superb acting in the film definitely helped take it to new heights, but who could forget the classic lines that go along with the film? You'd better hope you remember!

Clemenza's wife asks him to bring home a cannoli for her. So, after the assassination of Paulie Gatto, Clemenza tells the assassin to leave the gun in the car where Gatto was killed but take out the cannoli.


Who said: "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."

Vito's godson, Johnny Fontane, wants to be cast in a movie, but the director refuses. At least, until Vito Corleone makes him an offer that he can't refuse.


Who said: "You're getting a great reputation, Sonny. I hope you're enjoying it."

Sonny and Tom are close friends, and Sonny looks to Tom for advice. However, Tom is not afraid to tell Sonny the truth, even when Sonny doesn't want to hear it.


Who said: "Didn't want to get mixed up in the Family business, huh? Now you wanna gun down a police captain."

Michael offers to kill Virgil Sollozzo and Captain Mark McCluskey after his father is shot by Sollozzo's men, but Sonny is hesitant about his little brother's decision.


Who said: "I don't like violence, Tom. I'm a businessman. Blood is a big expense."

In order to strike a deal with Sonny Corleone, Sollozzo kidnaps Tom Hagen and persuades him to convince Sonny to accept his offer and enter the drug business.


Who said: "It's a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes."

The Corleone Family enforcer, Luca Brasi, is killed by Virgil Sollozzo. Sollozzo then sends a bulletproof vest that Brasi wore along with a fish to the Corleone Family, indicating that Brasi was dead.


Who said: "Goddamn FBI don't respect nothin'."

During a private Corleone wedding, FBI agents snoop around the parking lot, taking tag numbers from cars. Sonny storms out of the wedding to confront them, but there is nothing he can do to make them stop.


Who said: "You don't come to Las Vegas and talk to a man like Moe Greene like that!"

Fredo defends Moe Greene against Michael Corleone after Michael and Moe have an argument over Moe's businesses in Las Vegas.


Who said: "Mr. Corleone never asks a second favor once he's refused the first, understood?"

Tom goes to Jack Woltz on behalf of Vito Corleone, who wants Woltz to cast Johnny Fontane in his upcoming movie. Woltz refuses at first, but Vito sends him a message indicating that refusal is not an option.


Who said: "Only, don't tell me that you're innocent. Because it insults my intelligence and it makes me very angry."

Michael knows that Carlo Rizzi played a part in Sonny's death and tells Rizzi to admit what he did and give him the name of the person who told Rizzi to set up Sonny. After Rizzi gives Michael the name, Michael has him killed.


Who said: "I spent my life trying not to be careless. Women and children can be careless, but not men."

Although Michael Corleone is the new head of the Corleone Family, Vito Corleone still offers up his advice and input as Michael moves forward with a war against the other Families.


Who said: "Tell Mike it was only business. I always liked him."

Michael Corleone finds out that Tessio betrayed the family and set Michael up to be assassinated. For his treachery, Michael has Tessio killed.


Who said: "I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders!"

When Michael Corleone tells Moe Greene that the Corleone Family plans on buying Moe out, Moe snaps due to his frustration. Moe made a name for himself, and he doesn't plan on giving up what he has earned.


Who said: "You straightened my brother out?"

When Michael Corleone confronts Moe Greene about slapping around Fredo Corleone, Moe tells Michael that sometimes people need to be straightened out. Of course, Michael sees it as an embarrassment for the Family.


Who said: "Good. 'Cause a man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man."

Vito Corleone puts his family above everything else. He even says that his children are his weakness, and he often spoils them when he shouldn't.


Who said: "I believe in America. America has made my fortune."

After his daughter is brutally beaten beyond recognition, Amerigo Bonasera seeks help from Vito Corleone. He wants the vengeance that the legal system failed to provide, and Vito is just the man to give him that vengeance.


Who said: "In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns."

When Michael first lays eyes on his future wife, Apollonia, Calo tells him to be careful because women in Sicily can get you into trouble.


Who said: "Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your daughter's wedding."

Luca Brasi is one of Vito's most loyal men. The Don trusts Luca with any assignment, and Luca has killed men just for making the Corleone Family look bad.


Who said: "Where does it say that you can't kill a cop?"

Against Sonny's wishes, Michael decides to kill Captain Mark McCluskey, but killing a cop is bad for the Family and puts Michael's life in danger. After the assassination, he has to go hide in Sicily.


Who said: "You talk about vengeance. Is vengeance going to bring your son back to you? Or my boy to me?"

After the death of Sonny Corleone, Vito decides to make peace among the heads of the Five Families. He wants to end their war and bring Michael Corleone back to the United States.


Who said: "I need, Don Corleone, all of those politicians that you carry around in your pocket like so many nickels and dimes."

Virgil Sollozzo wants Vito Corleone to invest in his new drug business. In return, the Corleone Family will receive a thirty percent profit. However, Vito believes drugs are bad for business and refuses the offer.


Who said: "You touch my sister again, I'll kill you."

When Sonny finds out that Carlo Rizzi hit his sister, he beats and threatens Rizzi for it. Later, as an act of revenge, Rizzi sets Sonny up to be killed by Barzini's men.


Who said: "Have your car take me to the airport. Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news at once."

Jack Woltz rejects an offer from Vito Corleone because Woltz refuses to have Johnny Fontane in a movie that he is producing. Tom Hagen is the intermediary and knows that Vito Corleone will not be pleased with the news.


Who said: "You know Mike? We all were proud of you. Your father too."

Peter Clemenza has worked with Vito Corleone since they were young. He is a loyal ally, but he is suspected of betraying the Corleone Family. They learn that it was actually Sal Tessio though.


Who said: "I worked my whole life. I don't apologize for taking care of my family."

Vito Corleone never wanted Michael to take over the Family business. Not because Michael couldn't do the job, but he wanted Michael to have a better life. In the end, fate placed the business in Michael's hands.


Who said: "You think too much of me, kid. I am not that clever."

Virgil Sollozzo makes his move against the Corleone Family, but he fails to kill Vito. When he meets with Michael Corleone, he admits that he doesn't have any more tricks and wants to make a peace agreement.


Who said: "I frisked him. He's clean. I've frisked a thousand young punks."

Captain Mark McCluskey accompanies Michael Corleone and Virgil Sollozzo to the restaurant for their meeting. McCluskey searches Michael thoroughly to ensure that he didn't bring a gun.


Who said: "My father is no different than any other powerful man, any man who's responsible for other people, like a senator or president."

Kay Adams questions Michael Corleone about his family and his future, but Michael is loyal to his family. He defends his father and the future of the Family business by rebutting her remarks.


Who said: "No Sicilian can refuse any request on his daughter's wedding day."

At the beginning of The Godfather, Vito's daughter is getting married. On this day, many friends and family come to him for help with various problems, and the Don cannot refuse their request.


Who said: "It's true I have a lot of friends in politics, but they wouldn't be so friendly if they knew my business was drugs instead of gambling which they consider a harmless vice."

Vito Corleone wants to run a legitimate business and believes that drugs are a dirty trade. He doesn't want his name and reputation attached to drugs because he wants to maintain his political leverage.


Who said: "Certainly, he can present a bill for such services. After all, we're not Communists."

Vito Corleone calls a meeting between the Five Families in New York to broker a peace deal. However, in order to make a deal, Don Corleone musts agree to provide political protection for the drug trade in New York.


Who said: "Michael, that man over there is talking to himself. See that scary guy over there?"

Kay Adams is referring to Luca Brasi, who is the enforcer for Vito Corleone. He might seem scary, which he actually is, but he is also a loyal friend of the Corleone Family.


Who said: "You gotta go, you gotta go."

When Michael Corleone meets with Mark McCluskey and Virgil Sollozzo, he knows there is a gun planted in the bathroom that he has to receive. He tells them he needs to use the restroom and McCluskey nonchalantly tells him to go.


Who said: "I want you to find out what he's got under his fingernails"

Vito Corleone is suspicious of the new drug dealer, Virgil Sollozzo. Due to his suspicion, he sends Luca Brasi to infiltrate the Tattaglia Family and find out what Sollozzo really wants.


Who said: "This one time I'll let you ask me about my affairs."

Women in the Corleone Family don't have a say in the Family business. Although Kay Adams pushes Michael for answers, he closes her out after telling her that he did not kill Carlo Rizzi, which is a lie.
