World War II was the last big war of global proportions. Not only do war buffs study these battles, they take pride in knowing just what was involved in each one. Can you name them all?

Western Front, German offensive, Luxembourg.

The Battle of the Bulge was the last big conflict to take place on the Western Front. The battle was fought between Germany and the Allies.

Midway Island, Pacific Ocean, Japan.

The Battle of Midway was fought in the Pacific Ocean between the U..S. and Japan. The battle took place between the 4th and the 7th of June, 1942.

Hawaii, Japan, surprise.

The Attack on Pearl Harbor signals the U.S. entry into the Second World War. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The Russians kicked some Nazi butt during this battle. Volgograd is the current name for Stalingrad.

The Normandy landings are known as D-Day. The invasion was called Operation Overlord.

The Guadalcanal Campaign was known as Operation Watchtower. More than 7,000 U.S. soldiers were killed during the offensive.

The Battle of the Coral Sea was fought in the Pacific between the U.S., the Japanese and Australia. The Japanese sought to invade Port Moresby in southeast New Guinea.

The Second Battle of El Alamein took place in El Alamein, Egypt. The Allies claimed victory.

The Battle of Iwo Jima took place in Japan. The U.S. invasion was named Operation Detachment.

The Battle of Okinawa was named Operation Iceberg. The U.S. and England fought the Japanese.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf pitted the U.S. against Japan. Is it known as the largest naval battle of the war.

The Battle of France is often called the Fall of France. The Germans occupied France until the end of the war.

The Battle of Kursk took place in Russia. The Germans and the Soviets battled it out on the Eastern Front in Operation Citadel.

The North African Campaign pitted the Allies against the Germans in the desert. The three-year campaign included multiple battles.

The Invasion of Normandy was called Operation Overlord. It signaled, for many, the impending end of the war.

The Battle of Monte Cassino took place in Italy. The Allies assaulted the Winter Line in an attempt to reach Rome.

The Battle of Anzio took place in Italy. It was an Allied victory.

Operation Overlord was the codename given to the Normandy Invasion. We know it as D-Day.

Operation Husky was the code name given to the Allied invasion of Sicily. This victory went to the Allies.

The Battle of Berlin was the Fall of Berlin. The operation was called Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation.

Operation Market Garden pitted the Allies against Germany in the Netherlands. The offensive was viewed as an Allied failure.

France, Côte d'Azur, Allies.

Operation Dragoon was the code name given to the Allied invasion of Southern France. It is sometimes called the Battle of Côte d'Azur.

Japan, U.S., Pacific.

Operation Stalemate II was the code name given to the Battle of Peleliu. The battle took place on and around the island of Peleliu.

Mariana Islands, U.S., Japan.

The Battle of Saipan took place on Saipan in the Mariana Islands. The battle was a victory for the U.S.

Saint Petersburg, Eastern Front, Germans.

The Siege of Leningrad took place in what is now known as Saint Petersburg. It is sometimes called the 900-day siege, even though it technically lasted only 872 days.

Morocco, Algeria, Gymnast.

Operation Torch was initially called Operation Gymnast. The Allies invaded of French North Africa.

Gilberts, Galvanic, Japan.

The Battle of Tarawa took place in the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific. The battle pitted the U.S. against Japan.

U.S., Japan, Pacific.

During the Battle of Guam, the Allies took the island back from the Japanese forces.

Russia, Eastern Front, Barbarossa.

The Battle of Moscow heralded the failure of the German Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. The German code name for the battle was Operation Typhoon.

The Battle of Dieppe in France was also called the Dieppe Raid. At various stages, it was also known as Operation Rutter and Operation Jubilee.

Greece, Germans, air assault.

The Battle of Crete was a fierce battle for the island of Crete in Greece. The battle lasted 12 days.

The Battle of Gazala pitted the Germans against the Italians during the Western Desert Campaign in Libya. The battle was a victory for Rommel.

The Battle of the Java Sea pitted the Allies against the Japanese. The Japanese won.

Japanese, U.S., Pearl Harbor.

The Battle of Wake Island occurred at the same time as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It was a Japanese victory.

Alaska, Aleutian Islands, Canada.

The Battle of Attu was fought against Japan in the Aleutian Islands. The U.S. was aided by Canadian air support.
