As Henry Higgins put it about the English, "An Englishman's way of speaking absolutely classifies him! The moment he talks, he makes some other Englishman despise him." Of course, what's true of the English is also true of people in most parts of the world. Even if the way a person speaks doesn't make others despise them, it certainly makes people judge them. Often these judgments - beyond guessing where the speaker is from - are wildly inaccurate and off-base. Not everyone with a Texan drawl is a cowboy who loves steak and guns. Not everyone with a Valley Girl twang is a ditzy stoner who only cares about fashion. Not everyone who sounds like Alan Rickman is a movie villain (though let's be honest, most of them are).

However, sometimes some accents simply seem to suit a particular sort of person. A sexy French accent is great for seduction. An Italian accent is a fabulous one for expressing a love of the finer things in life. According to advertisers, a soft Scottish accent is apparently rated the most trustworthy, meaning it's the ideal one to have if you're planning to lie to everyone.
