TV history was forever changed in the 1980s thanks to the advent of cable. No longer did the big three networks control everything, and people finally started getting an abundance of choices. This was the groundwork that led to what we have today, with 500 channels and nothing to watch sometimes. It also meant that everyone had to try harder. It wasn't a given that people would just tune in to your show because they only had three choices every single night. If a show wanted an audience, more effort had to go into making it work. That didn't mean every show worked, it just exposed those that didn't work well so much more easily. 

Some of the best shows in TV history came out of the '80s. This was the age when sitcoms ruled in a way they never had before. TV families were bigger, bolder and more memorable. Dramatic shows amped up the action to the next level and the VCR meant people could record and watch shows rather than being glued to the TV 24/7. It was quite the time to be on the couch.
