The Myers-Briggs test was developed by a mother-daughter duo who used the theory by Carl Jung that people experience the world using four main functions (sensation, intuition, feeling and thinking). There are 16 possible combinations of personality types, so of course, the Hogwarts houses would align with the four most common types. The sorting hat must just be able to tell this about people and then place them in the house that will suit them the best.
