If you've ever had something happen to you that was so ridiculous and out of your control that you've shaken your head and thought, "I was born in the wrong time," take solace in knowing that you're not alone. With historical dramas like, "Poldark," "Downton Abbey," and "Boardwalk Empire" released on the airwaves, there are a ton of people wondering, "What if I lived during that time?" Your mind probably imagines that you're wearing the most beautiful clothes available during the period while you're chasing after scoundrels, sword or gunfighting, and in general living it up.

However, the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. In the late 1700s, when "Poldark" takes place, a way to earn your way up the social ladder was to join the military. Many of the soldiers in the British army were street urchins, aching for a way out. On top of this, military promotions weren't given because of a heroic deed, but because you bought your commission. And for the ladies: you were often treated as property, being offered to a suitor along with a dowry. And those beautiful dresses? If your assistants weren't around, it could easily take you hours to get dressed. Each noblewoman had at least eight different layers to wear. We don't know about you, but we would take slipping into a comfy pair of jeans and a tee over that any day.
