About This Quiz

Once upon a time, large human endeavors required massive amounts of human laborers. Would you like to build a pyramid? You'll need a few thousand slaves. Digging a canal, are we? You'll need a few thousand cheap laborers. The industrial revolution changed all of that.

Since the invention of the motor, humanity's ability to create has been turbocharged. The engine has freed billions of people from manual labor and dangerous jobs that would otherwise injure or kill them. Engines have meant we can easily and cheaply transport goods and people from one end of the planet to the other. Engines have allowed everything from sports like Formula One and NASCAR to tools used in sculpture, like drills and chainsaws. Engines have given cities the power to move, powering elevators, electric trains, water pumps, and life support machines. The engine, such as it is, has proven itself one of the most important inventions in the history of humankind, rivaling the blade and controlled fire.

Every engine has its own personality of course. Steam locomotives were said to have "moods," and one could argue that even car engines have unique personalities. Even solar power can't escape the brilliance of the engine, as some solar farms use a steam engine to generate electricity. With so many types of engines out there, which one suits your personality? Take this quiz and find out!
