Don't freeze up on this quiz. Test your "Titanic" knowledge.
The movie "Titanic" was based on the real-life cruise ship of the same name, but you probably already knew that (yeah, most people do). However, we bet there are tons of stuff you don't know about the ship that was billed as unsinkable. Of course, these factoids won't help you on this quiz, but we certainly can't give you all the answers.
The RMS Titanic was launched from Liverpool, UK, in early April 1912. It sank on April 15, 1912, a mere 13 days after launch. The Titanic took more than two years to build at the cost of $7.5 million (that's more than $300 million in today's money). Not a good expenditure, given that it lasted only two weeks.
The ship was billed as unsinkable, having been constructed using a design that would withstand a breach of four of the ship's 16 watertight compartments. Unfortunately, for the builders of the Titanic and the passengers she carried, the iceberg that the ship struck on the evening of April 14, 1912, breached five of those compartments, flooding the ship and bringing it down. Because the ship was thought unsinkable, there wasn't much thought put into lifeboats and survival drills. There were not enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew, and the ship's captain did not conduct survival drills with the passengers.
Although this was all bad news for the Titanic, it made for a great movie.
