The 1862 Gatling Gun is a hand-driven machine gun. This was the first gun to solve the problems of loading, reliability, and firing sustained bursts. It was invented by Richard Gatling during the American Civil War and was later used in the Spanish-American War.

Hiram Maxim invented the Maxim Gun in 1884, while he was living in England. It was actually manufactured by Vickers and was sometimes referred to as the Vickers-Maxim gun. This gun was used by every major power.
