When we first meet Bella, she is a 17-year-old girl who moves from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with her father, Charlie. From the very beginning, she says she's "absolutely ordinary," and Bella’s average-ness was no mistake. As Stephenie Meyer later said, she left out a detailed description of Bella in the book so that readers could easily relate. Alice, Edward's sister, became good friends with Bella and was always there to help her. In "Twilight," when James was hunting Bella, Alice and Jasper took her to Phoenix to see her mother. In "New Moon," when the Cullens left Forks, it was Alice who first returned to check up on Bella. She also traveled to Italy with Bella to save Edward’s life.

Victoria played a small role in the first book, helping James, her lover and coven leader, in hunting Bella Swan. But after James was killed, she decided to exact revenge on Edward Cullen and kill the love of his life, Bella. In "Eclipse," Victoria created an army of bloodthirsty newborn vampires, but she and her army were destroyed by Edward and the young wolf, Seth Clearwater.

Paul is a young, dark, gray wolf, who is prone to angry outbursts and can't control his emotions. When he learns that Jacob has told Bella about the pack, he even tries to attack her. He later seems to have no ill feelings toward Bella or Jacob, and then imprints on Jacob's older sister, Rachel.

Charlie is Bella's father and a police officer in Forks. He married Bella's mother, Renée, early, and they soon had Bella. Renée divorced Charlie not long after and moved to Phoenix, Arizona with their daughter. As Bella later mentions, Charlie has never quite gotten over her mother.

After being injured by a bear in 1935, Emmett was rescued by Rosalie. At Rosalie's request, he was given a second chance at life after being turned into a vampire by Carlisle. Later, Rosalie and Emmett fell in love with each other. Like all the Cullens, Emmett is a vegetarian vampire and he is the strongest in the family.

Jacob's best friend and second cousin, Quil Ateara V first appeared in "New Moon" when he was 16 years old but he does not become a wolf until "Eclipse." From the very beginning, he really likes Bella and flirts with her a lot.

Leah is a strong woman, fearless werewolf, and confident leader. At the same time, she is heartbroken and desperately in love - before transforming, Sam Uley, their Alpha, dated Leah. But because he was forbidden to tell her what he had become, their relationship fell apart and ended completely when he imprinted on Leah's cousin, Emily Young, started dating her and broke every promise he had made to Leah.

Renesmee Carlie Cullen, nicknamed "Nessie"by Jacob, Renesmee is considered to be Edward and Bella's "miracle," because her mother survived the pregnancy while she was still a fragile human. Renesmee has the ability to show people her thoughts just by touching them.

Rosalie and Jasper are the only ones in the family who don't take the surname of Cullen as they pass off as being biological siblings. Exceptionally beautiful even for a vampire, Rosalie had a tough life - she was beaten, gang-raped, and left to die in the streets by her fiance and his friends. She was found by Carlisle, who had smelled the blood and in order to save her, changed her into a vampire. Carlisle also secretly hoped that she would become Edward's mate one day,

The husband of Alice Cullen, Jasper took the name Hale to pass as Rosalie's sibling. He was born in Texas, joined the army during the American Civil War, and was turned into a vampire in 1863 by a vampire named Maria. When he became a vampire, Jasper gained the ability to manipulate the emotions of other people.

Benjamin, Tia's mate, has unique abilities that make him very valuable; even the Volturi want him to join their army. Besides having a high awareness of what is right and wrong, his other special ability is to control the elements of nature, air, earth, fire, and water. Benjamin's ability is unique because it involves physical manipulation.

Jane's twin bother, Alec, is able to block others' senses, while his sister can create illusions of pain and suffering. They both belong to the Volturi coven.

Leah's younger brother, Seth, transformed into a wolf during "New Moon," when he was just 15 years old. He is among the youngest of the pack, idolizes Jacob Black, and tries to be just like him.

Edward Anthony Masen (his real name) was born on June 20, 1901, ​in Chicago, Illinois and was a talented pianist, then a soldier. He and his parents became sick with the Spanish Influenza in 1918; both of his parents died, but before she died, Edward's mother begged the doctor who was taking care of them, Dr. Carlisle Cullen, to save her son. The doctor later changed Edward into a vampire, so he could survive. Over time, Edward formed a deep bond with Carlisle, who became a father figure to him.

Esme is the adoptive mother of Edward, Emmett and Alice Cullen, as well as Rosalie and Jasper Hale, even though her physical age is only 26. She has no special power as a vampire, but has a strong ability to love passionately and care about others. Esme was born in 1895 in Columbus, Ohio.

Jacob Black is an attractive Native American of the Quileute tribe in La Push and a werewolf ("shape-shifter") of the Quileute tribe. He is the former Beta of the Uley pack, and later became Alpha of his own. In "Twilight," he was 15 years old, and in "New Moon," he is 16 years old and phases into a wolf for the first time. He is madly in love with Bella, but after the birth of Renesmee Carlie Cullen, Bella and Edward's daughter, Jacob immediately "imprints"—that's how shape-shifters find their soul mates—on her.

One of the three Volturi leaders, Aro can read every thought a person has ever had once he has made physical contact. Their coven is regarded as "royalty" by other vampires because they have lived for well over 3,000 years and control all other vampires.

Amun, along with Tia, Benjamin, and Kebi are the members of the Egyptian coven. He didn't want to stand witness for the Cullens in "Breaking Dawn," and he and Kebi later fled in fear of the Volturi, mostly because of Benjamin, Tia's mate. Benjamin has a high awareness of what is right and wrong, and can control the elements of nature - his unique ability made Amun very protective of him, in fear of losing him to the Volturi.

Female vampires who comprise the Amazonian coven are tall, strong, and just gorgeous. They have dark skin, long hair, and wear clothes made of animal fur. Zafrina, along with Senna, and Kachiri comprise Amazonian coven in "Breaking Dawn." Her special ability is to create illusion.

Eleazar is one of the members of the Denali coven. They originally lived in Slovakia, but later had to move to Denali, Alaska, where they still live. Just like the Cullens, the Denali coven - that also includes Carmen, Tanya, Kate, and later Kate's mate, Garrett - practices drinking animal blood instead of human blood.

Marcus, who belongs to the vampire coven known as the Volturi, can sense the strength and nature of relationships. His former wife, Didyme, had the power to make others happy, and she also was one of the Volturi leaders.

Riley Biers a is tall and muscular newborn vampire with big red eyes and blonde hair. Victoria bites and changes Riley when he is approximately Bella's age in "Eclipse." When he can control his power, he helps Victoria to lead her army of newborn vampires. He does it for Victoria because he is madly in love with her.

In the films, Laurent is given the surname "Da Revin." This handsome, dark-haired vampire is a member of James' coven in "Twilight." When James and Victoria choose to track and murder Bella, Laurent leaves them and travels to Alaska, where he hoped to find solace among a coven of "vegetarian" vampires and become one of them. It didn't work out because he never fully adopted their strict diet of drinking animal blood, and "cheated" by occasionally killing people.

The members of the Irish coven, Liam, his mate Siobhan, and Maggie were called upon to witness for the Cullen clan in face of the Volturi in "Breaking Dawn." In "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part II," Liam was portrayed by Patrick Brennan.

Kebi is Amun's mate; they both belong to the Egyptian coven. They were very unhappy to stand witness for the Cullens in "Breaking Dawn," and they later flee in fear of the Volturi.

Renée Dwyer married Charlie Swan right after high school but divorced him soon after. Her daughter, Bella, always felt as if she was the mother in their relationship, trying to guide Renée away from doing stupid things. After Renée remarried a young baseball player, Phil Dwyer, Bella decided to live with her father, Charlie, in Forks so that Renée and her new husband could travel together.

Created by Sasha, Tanya is the leader of the Denali coven. She is an attractive blonde who once expressed an interest in Edward Cullen, though he turned her down.

Bree Tanner was a young and innocent newborn vampire - she was just 15 or 16 years old when Victoria changed her as a part of the newborn army in "Eclipse." Stephenie Meyer even wrote a novella about her - "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner."

Sam, the Alpha, leader, and oldest member of the La Push pack, was first introduced in "Twilight," where his emotions toward the Cullens eventually leads Bella to discover that they are vampires. In "New Moon," Sam Uley is given a larger role. Even though he is just 19 when he first appears in the series, he was always described as the calmest and most mature member of his pack.

Garrett is a member of the Denali coven. Originally, they are from Slovakia, but after Sasha and Vasilii's executions by the Volturi for creating an immortal child, they moved to Alaska. Garrett is a tall, handsome vampire with ruby eyes and long, sandy hair. He is an adventurer and considers himself an American patriot.

Another one of Jacob's best friends, Embry joins Jacob's pack near the end of "Breaking Dawn." His mother doesn't belong to the Quileute tribe, and she moved to the Quileute reservation while she was pregnant with him; his father is unknown. However, the shape-shifting trait is present only in the Black, Ateara, and Uley bloodlines; this fact makes Embry the half-brother of either Quil Ateara V, Jacob Black, or Sam Uley.

Carmen, a member of the Denali coven, speaks fluent Spanish and was the first to trust the Cullens and not fear Renesmee for being a half-breed.

Jared was the first wolf to phase after Sam and join the pack. Even though Jared's personality is never really explored, and he remains somewhat of a background character, the actor who played him (Bronson Pelletier) says that Jared's portrayal in the films reflects Pelletier's own joking, charismatic personality​.

She is Liam's mate. Her suspected special ability is to alter the course of a situation through willpower. This couple belongs to the Irish coven.

Tia is a member of the Egyptian coven - the oldest vampire coven in existence. She is Benjamin's mate. Benjamin has a high awareness of what is right and wrong.

Brady Fuller is one the youngest wolves in the pack and is distantly related to the Clearwater family. In "Eclipse," he had phased at the age of 13 without his parents' knowledge, and later became a part of Sam's pack.
